Is your 3-year-old reading and spelling? Mine is! (video)

**Warning: The video begins w/me popping her in the forehead. That eye-rolling, side-eyeing….we don’t play that! Proceed!

I wish I had a picture to show everyone the amazingly stupid look on my face when BD asked her to spell “cookie” and she did it. If you don’t want to watch the whole video, watch the last half. She is blending consonant sounds and “th-” and reading long and short vowel sounds. She’s now familiar with the idea of a sentence. She knows what one looks like, and she gets that they communicate an entire idea when she puts the words together. I’m so proud of her! I had to correct the way I was teaching her. At first, I was just telling her to pronounce each letter sound individually, but for a lot of words, that doesn’t work. Some letter sounds you can’t really isolate because they blend with the next letter to make a totally different sound. Now, I’m teaching her to “go slow” and to drag out each letter sound as much as she can into the next one. It’s helping a whole lot. I’m kind of glad I didn’t buy “Your Baby Can Read” though I still may buy it later.

  1. This video is nice. It shows that you are a really good mother and it’s great to see the relationship with the daughter that you always speak so highly of. I, like Karma, give you a high five for teaching your child to read. It’s great parenting….and probably has a lot to do with your Journalism degree too.

Thanks a lot! I’m not sure my degree has as much to do with it as my background in reading and spelling. My mom, aunt, and god-mom love to tell the story of how I shut some lady up by spelling “hippopotamus” when I was 3 (though I had to look up the spelling just now lol.). My mom says I taught my brother how to read when we were really young. (I don’t remember it at all.) All through school I scored grade levels beyond everyone else in reading and I won my school spelling bee in middle school. So, I guess the lil girl got it honest lol.
